How about getting rid of presidential primaries altogether?

What’s so great about the presidential primary system?

It allows the media to turn the entire political process into a maniacal ego-driven race among individuals.
It forces presidential candidates to undergo a scrutiny that makes the election all about their personal trivia (who got a $400 haircut, whose son kills harmless dogs etc)
It drains the air out of all other politics. Every issue crucial to our lives is reduced to a talking point or a gotcha moment. Omigod! Hillary planted a question on climate change! (Not that anybody cares about where she stands on such a vital issue. )
And does anybody know of any other supposed democracy where this kind of presidential primary system is practiced? I certainly don’t
This is why I think that it’s time for us to consider junking this 20th century artifact in the same way that we should junk such 18th century artifacts as the Electoral College. And since primaries are the creation of political parties and not the Constitution, they will be a lot easier to toss into that old dustbin of history.
